Elaine will have you in stitches.

Thursday, September 01, 2011

Welcome to Elaine Wood's cornucopia of craft-related and hand-stitched wares.

Elaine’s shop defies categorisation. She makes and sells aprons from £8 and tea cosies for about £9. She stocks hand-made craft items that would make unusual Christmas gifts, such as candles, pottery, cushions and soaps. Unusual auction-room finds, fents, hand-stitched fabric bread baskets are all there.

With her sewing machine set up in a corner of the shop Elaine is busy stitching the latest creation as you gaze around the colourful displays of fabrics, embroidery threads and jewellery.

She has discovered a supply of Liberty fabric from which she styles exclusive dressing gowns at very reasonable prices.

Stylish tote bags made from Designer Guild fabrics sit alongside individual cushions which re-use traditional panels of embroidery. What a great way of enjoying and appreciating the workmanship that not many of us have time for these days.

Elaine has combined all her hobbies into one shop. She said: “I opened the shop as just crafts and fabrics in January this year, but the shop has taken a life of its own and gone in different directions.

“My partner restores furniture, so some of that found its way into the shop. And then people started bringing me anything from pottery to clocks to sell. So now local makers can bring their products to sell and I take a small commission.”

A speciality is appliqué cushions for occasions such as weddings or Christenings. Elaine will use designs suitable for your particular celebration. These cost £15 to £18.

This autumn Elaine is continuing her popular Handiworkshops where you can learn skills such as crochet, knitting, how to cut out patterns and use a sewing machine.
