Citizens’ Jury

Tuesday, November 29, 2011

A team of twelve people will be chosen to have a say in the future of Keighley at Central Hall on Tuesday (6 December).

The citizens’ jury will give members of the public the chance to discuss decisions that affect their neighbourhoods. It is being organised by All Keighley Communities Together, which helps people to explore issues and play an active part in shaping their future.  But the first step is to hold a taster session to select the panel.

The citizens’ jury will be interactive and fun,’ says AKCT organiser Ash Alom. ‘It will involve role play and scenario building and help people to build consensus in a really interesting way.  ‘This is an exciting opportunity to be involved and it will be led by Tom Wakeford, an expert who has conducted citizens’ juries all over the country.’

AKCT helps people from diverse communities to talk about and tackle issues that matter to them. It develops the skills, knowledge and capacity of active citizens so that they can change things for the better. AKCT is based at the Keighley & Ilkley Voluntary and Community Action offices in Central Hall. It is funded by the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust West Yorkshire Racial Justice Programme.

As part of the Programme for a Peaceful City, the citizens’ jury project is delivered in partnership with University of Bradford Peace Studies department.

Interest in the taster session is expected to be high so anyone wanting to take part should contact Ash Alom on (01535) 665258 or email ash@kivca.org.uk as soon as possible. The event will be from 4.30pm to 8pm.
